  • 13 November 2009: HPTi's HR Director Named Best Executive

Congratulations to Eleni Antoniou—HPTi's Director of Human Resources—who was just named Best Executive in the 6th Annual Stevie Awards for Women in Business. Eleni was competing in the Best Executive-Service Businesses category, up to 2,500 employees.

Eleni was presented the award on Friday, November 13, at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City during the annual awards dinner. Joining Eleni at the event was HPTi's Rebecca Jimenez, a finalist in the Employee of the Year category. Eleni's mother, Athena, was also in attendance, making the evening especially memorable for the HPTi executive.

“We are all very proud of Eleni,” commented Rob Jones, Senior Vice President of Corporate Development. “She is the embodiment of our firm's core values, and I am delighted that she has been recognized for this significant honor.”

Since joining the firm in 1998, Eleni has seen HPTi's workforce more than quadruple—thanks in no small part to her constant dedication to improving workplace satisfaction. Each year, Eleni rededicates her efforts to improving the health, happiness, and heart of HPTi's corporate culture. Eleni partners with the executive team to execute HR strategies focused specifically on employee engagement and employee retention. As a direct result of her efforts, HPTi was able to reduce its corporate-wide turnover by more than half over the last 18 months. HPTi now leads the government services market in this area—with a turnover rate of just 10%.

With these kinds of results, recognition is not new to Eleni. She was honored with the 2008 Human Resource Leadership Award of Greater Washington in the Strategic Alignment category. For the past three years, Eleni has also been a finalist for the American Business Award for Human Resources Executive.

At HPTi, we put benefits and policies in place to help our people balance their work and home lives. This benefits them and the company,” said HPTi President, Timothy P. Keenan.

Since 1992, the CARE Awards have identified the best places to work in Northern Virginia. The program was established to recognize companies that are leaders in providing family friendly benefits and helping employees maintain a healthy work and life balance.

  • 4 November 2009: HPTi Named Government Contractor of the Year

HPTi's string of honors grows longer! On November 4, HPTi was named the Greater Washington Government Contractor Award Contractor of the Year in the $25M–$75M category. One of Washington D.C.'s most sought-after recognitions among companies that serve the federal government, this award recognizes innovation, vision, and integrity among government contractors. The GovCons are administered by the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce, the Professional Services Council, and Washington Technology magazine.

HPTi competed against A-T Solutions, Inc., Base Technologies, Inc., MicroTech, and The Tauri Group, LLC for Contractor of the Year ($25 to $75 million). Community service, people programs, service to the country, and business success are all considered in naming finalists and winners. HPTi was also required to submit several letters of recommendation from executive-level government officials served by the company. Clients from healthcare, the intelligence community, the Treasury, and several others agencies contributed to HPTi's winning nomination.

“This is a tremendous honor,” said HPTi president Timothy Keenan. “We are constantly putting programs into place for the benefit of our clients, and this award affirms that we are having a positive impact on their vital missions.”

  • 24 September 2009: HPTi Wins 2009 American Business Ethics Award

High Performance Technologies, Inc. (HPTi) has won the 2009 American Business Ethics Award (ABEA). HPTi is the only mid-sized company in the country to receive this honor.

Administered by the Foundation for Financial Service Professionals (FSP), the ABEA recognizes companies that demonstrate commitment to core values. HPTi was nominated for the award after winning top honors in the 2008 National Capital Business Ethics Award. HPTi needed to demonstrate client commitment, employee buy-in, ethics training, refined policies, and many other attributes to prove the company's ethical business practices. As part of its ethics program, HPTi ties its core values to essential business practices like performance reviews, promotions, interviews, and client satisfaction. Employees are encouraged to display the core values and hold their coworkers accountable.

Joseph E. Frack, Chief Executive Officer of FSP, noted that HPTi “stood out in a field of very strong contenders.”

Tim Keenan, HPTi's CEO, added, “The ABEA represents a pinnacle achievement in our corporate maturity. To be recognized for conducting business at the highest level of ethical conduct is truly an honor, especially when the mistrust of corporate America seems to be at an all-time high.”

  • 10 August 2009: HPTi Awarded High Performance Computing Contract for Department of Defense

High Performance Technologies, Inc. (HPTi), has been awarded one of the Department of Defense's (DoD) premier applied research contracts—the User Productivity Enhancement, Technology Transfer and Training (PETTT) contract for the DoD's High Performance Computing Modernization Office (HPCMO). Potentially worth $147 million over ten years, this win demonstrates HPTi's growing reputation within the DoD science and engineering community.

HPTi will collaborate with government labs and coordinate the top research universities and private companies of the PETTT team to produce meaningful and timely science and engineering solutions for America's warfighters. The team is made up of some of the premier HPC labs and companies in the country, including Texas Advanced Computing Center, Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, and 19 other university and industry partners. The contract's objectives include collaboration, HPC tool development, enhanced productivity, and exploration of research areas the DoD believes will achieve technological advantages for our soldiers.

“The PETTT program is the keystone of DoD's scientific innovation initiatives, delivering premier capabilities to our service men and women,” commented HPTi President Tim Keenan. “Supporting the HPCMO with this critical mission makes HPTi one of the nation's foremost providers of computational services.”

  • 06 August 2009: HPTi Is Going Green--But What Does That Mean?

In the words of Kermit the Frog, “It's not easy being green.” He's right; it's hard to keep up with all the trends, buzz words, and products, and finding the greenest solution can be a challenge. One thing we do know: the measures we take today can preserve the environment and our community for tomorrow. Because HPTi is a community-minded firm, it makes sense that while we're growing at such a rapid rate, we are choosing to expand our Ballston office and move to a new, green, state-of-the-art, LEED Silver certified building - The Regent - situated just blocks from our current Ballston location.

So what does all of this LEED-certified stuff mean? LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and it is a rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council that provides the standards for environmentally sustainable construction. The rating system addresses six major areas:

    • Sustainable sites

    • Water efficiency

    • Energy and atmosphere

    • Materials and resources

    • Indoor environmental quality

    • Innovation and design process

Being certified silver means that the Regent building has been examined by a third-party organization and is accredited with 50-59 points out of 100. The Regent accumulated points because of its access to public transportation, its use of glass to allow daylight to penetrate the interior office spaces (which lessens the need for electricity), and its 50% improvement in water efficiency. The office building also features a state-of-the-art variable air volume (VAV) system, which systematically heats and cools the space with energy efficiency.

While being green certainly has its challenges, HPTi is excited to join the ranks of other great companies dedicated to smart, sustainable, and environmentally healthy development. We know that taking small steps now will lead to great rewards later.

The International Business Awards are the only global, all-encompassing business awards program honoring great performances in business. Recipients of the awards were selected from more than 1,700 entries received from organizations and individuals in more than 30 countries.

In 2007, Mr. Keenan was recognized with an American Business Award for Executive of the Year, and his company, HPTi, was awarded the Best Overall Company Award in June of 2009. Since founding HPTi in 1991, Mr. Keenan has helped grow the firm from three people working in a basement to a nation-wide firm employing over 325 people and enjoying year-over-year revenue growth of more than 20%. Since the untimely death of his co-founder in 2003, Mr. Keenan has kept the company going thanks to his dedication to core values and large investments in people programs.

“Tim's IBA is a great accomplishment,” commented HPTi Senior Vice President Robert Jones. “He is tremendously dedicated to making sure our people have the support and programs they need to be successful. Tim emails employees on the anniversary of their employment and speaks in person to potential college hires. It's those kinds of personal touches that earned him international recognition for his leadership and I am delighted this has been recognized.”

“Despite the harsh economic climate, entries to the IBAs actually grew a bit this year, and that illustrates the increasing importance of The International Business Awards worldwide,” said Michael Gallagher, president of The Stevie Awards, presenters of the IBAs.

A complete list of honorees and other details are available at www.stevieawards.com/iba.

Joining the company in the Stevies winners' circle was Rebecca Jimenez—HPTi's 2008 Employee of the Year—who was named the Best Technical Professional in the country. Ms. Jimenez specializes in program protection planning for the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense, and her insights have had a direct impact on multi-billion dollar programs at the Department of Defense.

“Rebecca is the benchmark by which HPTi recruits new college hires,” stated Peter Lierni, Ms. Jimenez's manager.

“Despite the economy faltering,” HPTi's President Timothy Keenan added, “we've continued to enjoy strong revenue growth. That growth and our recognition at the Stevies stem from the extraordinary contributions of our employees. Rebecca exemplifies the talent and dedication of HPTi's workforce.”

This is the third consecutive year that HPTi's Employee of the Year has won a Stevie, and the second consecutive year that an HPTi employee has won the Stevie for Best Technical Professional.

HPTi was also a finalist for Best Community Service Committee, and nearly a dozen HPTi employees were finalists in categories such as Best Corporate Communicator, Best Customer Service Executive, Best Finance Executive, and Best Human Resources Executive.

Hailed as “the business world's own Oscars” (New York Post , April 27, 2005), the American Business Awards is the only national, all-encompassing awards program honoring great performance in business.

  • 18 May 2009: HPTi Announces Its Grand Challenge—An Innovative Competition

Many organizations claim to have cultures of innovation and creativity, but HPTi is putting programs in place and aligning resources to grow and promote novel ideas. The Grand Challenge, unveiled in the spring of 2009, has already generated several insights that are being developed into valuable applications for HPTi clients. What's more, the program has propagated a wave of innovation and collaboration within the company.

Grand Challenges are rooted in technology—in other words, in the application of a methodological activity, discipline, or study (science) or in the application of electronic or digital products and systems. They must focus on the outward market (not on internal HPTi operations), and they must relate to at least one of HPTi's portfolio items: System Engineering, Computational Science, Secure Software, Enterprise Technology Planning, and Knowledge Discovery and Visualization.

To participate in the Grand Challenge, employees from across the company submit ideas, which are voted on by their peers. The five highest scoring ideas are identified, and their sponsors are given 15 minutes at the company's technology offsite to describe the ideas and their value. After another round of voting, two or three challenges are identified for development, and their sponsors lead brainstorming breakout sessions at the offsite to refine the ideas. After the ideas have been developed—and after employees have been given the opportunity to contribute to this development—HPTi leadership allocates resources to act on the innovation. Based on the particular challenge, final outcomes could include whitepapers, paper and software prototypes, thought-leadership pieces, brown-bag sessions, and investment cases.

Promising innovations developed this spring include software improvements for high-performance computing, insights into social networking and information sharing, and speeding up the parallelization of sequential models in computational science. Though some of these topics can seem intimidating, collaboration among HPTi knowledge leaders has made seemingly incomprehensible ideas accessible and relevant to people outside of a particular discipline. As the program incorporates the lessons it has learned during its inaugural administration, it continues to gain popularity and support among HPTi's technology innovators.

  • 06 February 2009: HPTi's Mark Thompson Honored by Montana State University

HPTi's Mark Thompson is being honored by the Montana State University as a 2009 Outstanding Alumnus for Exceptional Achievement. Each year, the university selects four alumni who have distinguished themselves in fields ranging from business, to education, to public or civil service, to the arts and sciences. Recipients of the award have exhibited unusual courage, creativity, perseverance, or originality in their chosen field; raised the quality of life for others; contributed to and promoted the advancement of higher education; or distinguished themselves as leaders in their profession or area of interest.

Mark graduated from Montana State University-Billings in 1985, earning a bachelor of science degree in economics. He also holds an MBA (with honors) from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.

Since he joined HPTi in 2004, Mark has been instrumental in developing HPTi's business in high performance computing (HPC) systems integration, scientific computing, HPC software and utilities, and computational sciences and research and development management. In 2007, he was directly responsible for HPTi's largest contract win ever—a $214.5 million contract with the Army High Performance Computing Research Center that Mark identified and pursued by building relationships with HPC research teams across various universities, including Stanford University. In 2008, he was awarded HPTi's Summit Award, one of the highest recognitions HPTi bestows.

“I want to extend my personal congratulations to Mark for this well deserved achievement,” said Scott Miller, HPTi's Chief Operating Officer. “It's been my distinct pleasure to have worked closely with Mark since he joined HPTi five years ago. I have witnessed Mark's unique talents and professionalism first hand and have come to admire him for his tenacity, creativity, and commitment to our success.”

  • 05 February 2009: HPTi CEO Recognized as One of Greater Washington's Thought Leaders

HPTi announced today that CEO Tim Keenan has been named to the Washington SmartCEO magazine 2009 Smart100 program, an exclusive group of 100 CEOs assembled by an independent selection committee. A Smart100 CEO is selected for his or her leadership, strategic vision, and character rather than on the growth of the organization.

“HPTi is pleased to be selected for this high honor and recognition of our efforts to build a firm that strives to create economies of skill versus economies of scale,” Keenan said.

All Smart100 CEOs will be profiled in the 100-page annual supplement in SmartCEO this spring. The Smart100 will also be listed on www.smartceo.com. The Smart100 companies represent a variety of industries.

“The Smart100 represent 100 of Greater Washington's CEOs. No other publications in the Greater Washington area have produced a publication of this magnitude with such high-caliber CEOs. The Smart100 embodies 100 CEOs with incredible business minds who have successfully grown their companies to be the best in Washington,” says Group Associate Publisher of SmartCEO, Jaime Park.
